My goals for the coming year really all relate to my newish interest in minimalism. I plan to spend the year scaling back all the clutter in our lives and home. We have lots of it.
I have no desire to get rid of things we need and use and love. The issue is that we have lots of things that we don't need or use or love. I want to spend this year getting rid of that stuff...books that sit unread, clothes that hang in the closet unworn, knick knacks that have no emotional value. Along these lines, I want to get better at getting rid more quickly of stuff that comes in but doesn't need to stay...mail, school paper, etc. I need to deal with mail more quickly and file things that need to be saved and trash those that don't. I found an app for my phone that lets me take pictures of the girls' school/art work and then they can be printed into a book. I set up albums for each of them. Fortunately, Violet brings home much, much less than Blueberry. I have to wait until Blueberry's not around, though, to get rid of her stuff or she gets really upset about it.
I also want to spend this year getting better at not bringing unnecessary stuff into our home and help the girls understand this better too. Violet gets this pretty well already. Blueberry does not. She's currently practicing for her role on the tv show, Hoarders. My mom and I were talking about this yesterday...how I used to go to Target to kill time and I'd always end up buying something. I don't do that anymore, thank goodness. Still, I do end up with too much stuff that I don't need, stuff I have to find a place for until I finally decide to get rid of it. I want to get better about not bringing that stuff into our home to begin with.
I'm hoping some of this decluttering will lead to some extra cash...like the 10 place settings of dishes and matching serving pieces sitting in my top cabinets. They were wedding gifts and may have been used once or twice. They're beautiful (Mikasa, Sao Paulo) but what do I need them for. Some of this decluttering will lead to more trips to the Goodwill donation center. Some of it will fill up the trash can and recycle bin.
I've been slowly working on this for the last couple of years but it's finally time to buckle down and get serious. 2013 is my year to reduce.

Awesome goal! Really great! One of mine is to unpack the new house, I have a feel much will be donated and sold at a garage sale as a result!
So happy you are joining in the 30 Days of Nothing Excess!
