The garden

Well...there's no garden yet but it's coming.

I've lived in this house for 9 years (holy cow!!!) and I've never done much in the yard.  Well, that's not entirely true.  I've redone the front flower beds...mostly with shurbs and perennials so there's not much to do each year except clean them up a little.  The problem with working in the front yard is the dogs cry the whole time we're out there.  Not fun!

Blueberry loves to putter around my mom's garden and Violet, although she doesn't love in the same way Blueberry does, enjoys the yard too.

While I'll never be the master gardener that my mom is, I've decided to tap into her knowledge and do some more gardening in my back yard.  That way, we can be out there with the dogs and the girls can be out there alone.  I can watch Blueberry putter while I sit on the screen in back porch.

Today, we planted 4 pots...one of carrots, two of tomatoes, and one of bell peppers.  We have one more bell pepper plant to plant but we need more soil for that pot.  My idea this year is to go small with some pots to see if we can stick with it during the heat of summer.  Still, the idea of being able to send the girls out to pick tomatoes, carrots, and peppers is awesome.

We're also going to plant a flower garden along one side of the porch.  Lucky for me, I have a master gardener mom and she has lots of stuff growing that she's offered to share.  She also gives me lots of advice on what to plant and where.  I have waiting for a spot some ornamental grasses, a crape myrtle, and a vitex tree.  I'm not sure what else we'll put in there except that we're going to do a fairy garden somewhere in there for the girls.  They are so excited!

It all sounds so nice right now, while the weather isn't too hot.  Cross your fingers we don't let it all die in July and August.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...sprinkles and a redbud with pretty pink flowers

I am thinking...I hope this cookie cake turns out

I am thankful...that I started Dave Ramsey's financial plan a few years ago so that when I replaced my air conditioner and furnace yesterday, I did it without debt and without worry

In the kitchen...a cookie cake in the oven

I am wearing...yoga pants, a t-shirt, and a sweater

I am creating...a nicer yard??? (if I'm successful)

I am going...to riding lessons with the little if it's not raining

I am wondering...about so many things

I am reading...several books, none of which I can seem to finish

I am hoping...we get some answers soon

I am looking forward to...my new job

I am learning...to be patient

Around the house...things are getting slowly cleaned up

I am pondering...how to make tweens see reality

A favorite quote for today...April showers bring May flowers

One of my favorite things...yogurt with granola

A few plans for the rest of the week:  more clean up around the house, new pots for the back yard veggies, and a birthday party

A peek into my day...

Fav Foto Friday

Today was my last day at my job of 7 1/2 years.  It's rather bittersweet.  I have an exciting new opportunity but I will miss my many awesome coworkers.  Here I am with some of those coworkers at my going away party this afternoon...
I'm taking a week off to get stuff done at home while the girls are in school and I start my new job on April 15th.  Cross your fingers for a smooth transition.

April Goals

I'm posting this mostly as a reminder to myself...

My last day at my current job is this Friday (yikes!) and I'll have a week off at home before starting my new job.  The girls will be in school so I'm going to try to get a lot done during that week...and during the rest of the month.

- clear all the paper clutter out of the dining room
- oil the desk in the garage and get it moved into Blueberry's room
- get the chest that will be moved out of Blueberry's room listed on craigslist
- get my front yard cleaned up of leaves and weeds in the flower beds
- get pots and the veggies we're going to plant (regular tomatoes, grape tomatoes, peppers, carrots) and plant them
- get extra stuff listed on craigslist...an airplane model I'd given my ex, some framed flower prints no longer on the walls, an extra camera bag, anything else I can find laying around that might bring in some cash
- clean up the mess of books and toys on Blueberry's side of the bed
- clean up the book shelf in my bedroom (considering selling it and getting a smaller one...not sure)
- go through some of Blueberry's toys and books and pack them up (if she doesn't notice, I'll get rid of them)

I've got my budget worked out for April.  I don't actually have room for the pots in there but I'm going to try to squeeze on other things (and sell some things) to see if I can get them in.

I will be getting some extra money from my current job for banked vacation time (3 weeks worth) and I will get everything to my mom to finish my taxes tomorrow so I will know what my refund will be.  I will probably be spending that on a new air/heat system...money up front but it should help with my electric and gas bills...and then the rest will go into my emergency and sinking funds (for summer camp.)

That's the plan and I'm sticking to it.
